European aviation and climate challenge: key insights from the 2025 Environmental Report

According to the EASA European Aviation Environmental Report 2025, flights departing from the EU27+EFTA represented 12% of total transport-related greenhouse gas emissions and 4% of all GHG emissions in the region in 2022.

The environmental impact of aviation goes beyond CO₂ emissions — it also includes NOₓ, water vapor and particulate matter, which contribute to contrail and cirrus cloud formation, significantly amplifying climate effects.

These findings underline the importance of projects like DEMOQUAS, which applies advanced uncertainty quantification (UQ) tools to components such as hydrogen tanks, combustion systems and airport operations — all with the aim of making aviation safer and more sustainable.
